PESTICIDES LINKED TO PARKINSON’S

PESTICIDES

LOCUS OF RISK

EXPOSURE

Aldrin, Endrin &* DieldrinUsed on corn, cotton, termites, mosquitoes Alters dopamine neurons; increasing vulnerability to toxins;  function inhibiter Eating fish, shellfish, dairy, breast milk and exposure
Rotenone Used to kill invasive fish Inhibits function of cell mitochondria (energy provider) Application and random exposure
Paraquat, paraquat dichloride Used on pecans, chile, alfalfa Increases oxygen derivatives harming cell structure Application and random exposure
*Maneb Used on vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, sod and field crops Acts as synergist to other pesticides Application and random exposure, residue on food crops
Ziram Used on crop foliage Inhibits the break-down of the alpha-synuclein protein (communication) Application and exposure
Propargite Used on nuts, corn and grapes Oxidative cell stress, mitochondria damage Private well water contamination, aerial spray
Methomyl Used on alfalfa Oxidative cell stress, mitochondria damage Private well water contamination
Chlorpyrifos Used on corn, cotton, fruit trees Oxidative cell stress, mitochondria damage Private well water contamination, aerial spray
2, 4-D Used as herbicide in lawns Oxidative cell stress, mitochondria damage Occupational exposure
Permethrin, cypermethrin Used in bug/mosquito spray Oxidative cell stress, mitochondria damage Open field exposure
Diazinon Agricultural use onlyInsecticide (cockroaches, fleas) Increase levels of serum amylase and glucose Occupational exposure
*Endosulfan Insecticide, cotton, potatoes, apples, tomatoes Endocrine disruptor, acute neurotoxic Phased out, Application and exposure
*Zineb Fungicide (mildew, rust, redfire disease) Cholinesterase disruptor Application and exposure
Heptachlor (insecticide) Changes in the corpus striatum Application and exposure
LidanePesticides used in hair products GABA neurotransmitters disruptor Application and exposure
Atrazine (herbicide)corn, soybeans, and sugarcane affects basal ganglia function in vivo Occupational exposure and well water contamination
*Benomyl  Fungicide (earthworms) inhibition of a key enzyme in the brain exposure
Glyphosate Herbicide (RoundUp) inhibits activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes; affects gut microbiota Application and exposure

* (discontinued) A few pesticides have been banned but remain active due to their long half lives which are still impacting our environment and our health today.

Paraquat is widely used in Dona Ana County (pecans, chile, alfalfa, etc.) as well as ziram and maneb. Exposure to the combination of  paraquat & ziram raises the risk of PD by 80% while exposure to the combination of paraquat, ziram and maneb has a threefold risk. (UCLA study)
